Olaplex is a public haircare company valued at $8.8 Billion.
Many Olaplex users are experiencing significant hair loss after using the company’s products.
Users report that they have experienced hair loss after using No. 3 Hair Perfector treatments, No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo, and No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner.
For example, one user reports that after using Olaplex No. 3, she lost 50 percent of her hair and it took almost 3 months to grow back. Some users also report scalp and/or eye irritation.
On February 28, 2022, Olaplex announced that it would no longer use butylphenyl methylpropional—a fragrance ingredient also known as lilial—in Olaplex No. 3 based on the ingredient’s link to infertility. However, Olaplex does not appear to have addressed hair loss reports and reportedly hides negative reviews.
The average 8.5 ounce Olaplex product retails for $28. The annual revenue of No. 3 Hair Perfector treatments, No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo, and No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner on Amazon.com alone is $33.48 Million (approximately 1.19 million units sold).
L’Oréal, Johnson and Johnson, and Unilever/TRESemmé recently faced similar class actions alleging hair loss and scalp irritation. Another similar class action against WEN Hair Care resulted in a $26 million settlement.
Olaplex destroyed my hair and after over a year of not using it, my hair still isn’t the same.
