T-Mobile customers who had Sprint CDMA contracts have complained the company is forcing them to upgrade to new devices with more expensive contracts.
The FCC announced the move of CDMA networks to GSM networks. GSM phones use SIM cards to link a particular phone with its network, while CDMA phones don’t require a SIM card because the phone itself is linked to the network. The ending of CDMA networks means CDMA phones will be useless to customers.
Sprint merged with T-Mobile and promised CDMA service to continue through January 1, 2022. T-Mobile moved back the Sprint CDMA shutdown to June 30, 2022.
There is a current class action investigation regarding the shutdown of Sprint CDMA network. Regulators have also begun looking into the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile concerning CDMA contracts.
